Bathing Beauty!

So... how many of us have done it? leapt into the pool with our lenses in? According to Optician Magazine this week, we need to learn the dangers of wearing contact lenses in swimming pools. Dr Reza Farahani, an optometrist and ophthalmology instructor at Texas Medical School described contact lenses as a 'reservoir of toxicity'!!!

We are warned, 'They can act as a sponge for micro organisms and chemicals. In some cases, if the pool water is dirty, it can lead to corneal infections and /or ulcers.'

It is recommended that we remove lenses prior to swimming and use tightly sealed prescription goggles.. although.. as I'm sure you're all thinking also, its not the best look for the beach or poolside!.. So another solution to the problem is Daily disposable lenses that can be thrown away immediately you get out of the pool. Yes but, No butt!

So... its July 1st and the English smoking ban has started! If ever there's a reason to try and give up then surely this is it? I mean ,..who wants to be stood out side your favourite wine bar during the summer in the rain..in your slingbacks and your favourite sunnies, and lets face it... it's bound to be raining, just to have a cigarette!

The link between smoking and specific eye diseases is well known. The most common is

Age-related Macula Degeneration or AMD. Which is more related to smoking than lung cancer. Cigarette smoke enhances oxidants, which are the chemical byproducts in the body that can damage cells, including those in the eyes. Smoking also affects blood flow which is closely linked to vision and therefore indirectly associated with several eye diseases including Glaucoma and Cataracts.

So to maintain healthy vision, good teeth, fabulous skin and to avoid hair frizz and wind burn this summer... why not try giving up?...Go Smoke Free!

The evils in our make up bag!!!

So come on girls, how many of us have eyeliners that have been in our make up bags for a year or so? Research by the College of Optometrists has revealed that our bad beauty habits are risking the health of our eyes!

According to Optician magazine this week, 'one in four of us make up junkies continue to use bacteria ridden products that are over four years old!! and 25% of us women confessed to sharing eye make-up with friends and family even though 10% of us admit to having had conditions such as conjunctivitis. Women in their late 30's and early 40's had the oldest make-up bags and women in Wales were the worst culprits over all!!!'

Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric advisor to the College, said:' Mascara can be a breeding ground for bacteria, so it's not surprising that we've found nearly half of women suffer from itchy, watery and red eyes.'

So come on girls.. if ever there's been a good excuse to give your bag of tricks a makeover, this is IT!!...Doctors orders!!!
